Why look for a Intercom alternative
Intercom is the product I recommend most often to SaaS teams whose support happens inside their app — and it's also the one people leave most often once the bill lands. Both things are true, and understanding why is the whole ballgame.
The pricing is the trigger. Intercom combines per-seat plans (Essential started around $29 per seat per month billed annually at time of writing, with Advanced and Expert tiers reaching roughly $132), an AI agent — Fin — priced at $0.99 per resolution, and add-ons: a Pro add-on from $100 per month, Proactive Support Plus at $99 per month, Copilot per agent. Each piece is defensible; the stack is what surprises teams. When Fin resolves 3,000 conversations in a month, that line item alone exceeds several competitors' entire bills, and resolution-based billing makes budgeting a guessing game.
The second reason is fit. Intercom is built around messaging and product-led support. Teams whose center of gravity is email ticketing with formal SLAs, or who need a deeply structured helpdesk with granular permissions and complex routing, often find Intercom's inbox model lighter than a traditional helpdesk at lower tiers.
The third is plain cost of growth: every new agent, every new channel, every add-on increments the bill, and scaling support headcount through Intercom gets expensive fast. Teams that joined at startup pricing feel this most sharply — the tool that fit at five people can double or triple in cost by fifteen, and by then your workflows live inside it.
The alternatives compared
I compared these on total cost at real volumes (including usage charges), support depth versus sales-tooling depth — several picks here sell to sales teams, not support, and I say so — AI capability, and current product status. Two picks are being sunset; prices are as verified at time of writing.
Clay
Clay is not a helpdesk and I won't pretend it is: it's a go-to-market data platform that enriches lists from 100-plus providers and automates research and personalized outreach. It appears in comparisons like this because teams looking at Intercom for growth often mean pipeline growth, not support. Pricing at time of writing: a free plan, then roughly $167–$185 per month for the entry paid tier (billing-cycle dependent) and around $495 per month for Growth, with credit consumption on top. Switch if your bottleneck is finding and enriching leads — no support tool does this. Stay if you came for support; Clay replaces none of Intercom's job, and it's an expensive tool to own casually.
Freshdesk
Freshdesk is the value benchmark in helpdesk software: ticketing, shared inbox, knowledge base, customer portal, and Freddy AI from $19 per agent per month billed annually, $55 on Pro, $89 on Enterprise at time of writing. Switch if you want predictable per-agent pricing and classic ticketing depth — Freshdesk's SLA policies, routing, and reporting at Pro cost less than Intercom's Advanced seats before a single Fin resolution is billed, and AI agent sessions are metered in a way you can cap.
Stay if conversational support and AI resolution are the point. Intercom's Fin outperforms Freddy on genuinely complex queries in my experience, and the in-product messenger is more capable for SaaS. If your support lives in email and a help center, Freshdesk's economics win. Migration out of Intercom is also more contained than people fear — the help center content and canned replies export, and shared-inbox history is recoverable — so the switching cost is mostly workflow rewiring.
Freshsales
Freshsales is Freshworks' sales CRM — pipeline, built-in phone, email, chat, sequences, AI scoring. Pricing at time of writing: free for up to 3 users, Growth $9 per user per month billed annually, Pro $39, Enterprise $59. Switch if what you actually need is to sell, not support: plenty of Intercom users run it as a quasi-sales channel, and for real pipeline management Freshsales is far cheaper and better structured.
Stay if customer support is the job — Freshsales has no ticketing helpdesk (that's Freshdesk), and its live chat is a sales feature rather than a support workspace.
Pipeliner CRM (now Coevera)
Pipeliner CRM relaunched as Coevera in 2026: a visual-pipeline B2B sales CRM built around salesperson development, targeting teams of 15 and up. Pricing at time of writing: $85 per user per month on Business, $115 Enterprise, $150 Unlimited, billed annually, with a 15-user minimum. Switch if you're really shopping for a sales CRM for a mid-size field or inside team and want visual pipeline management with built-in training focus — it's a considered product with fast-adoption claims I find plausible for visual learners.
Stay if you wanted support software. Coevera is sales, not service — it replaces none of Intercom's ticketing, messenger, or AI agent — and the 15-seat minimum prices out small teams immediately.
HubSpot Service Hub
Service Hub gives you ticketing, live chat, a knowledge base, a customer portal, and feedback surveys on HubSpot's shared CRM database. Pricing at time of writing: free tools, Starter from $7 per seat per month promotional (list around $20), Professional roughly $90 per seat per month, Enterprise around $150. Switch if cost predictability and CRM context matter more than AI resolution — a Service Hub Professional seat costs less than Intercom Advanced before Fin, and every conversation carries full sales and marketing context.
Stay if Fin-style AI resolution is what you're buying. HubSpot's Customer Agent is credit-metered and improving fast, but in my testing Intercom's Fin is still ahead on resolution quality for knowledge-base-driven queries. Also count the migration: moving messenger history, help center content, and automation rules out of Intercom is a real project, not an afternoon.
Salesforce
Salesforce Service Cloud is the enterprise answer: case management, omni-channel routing, a vast app ecosystem, and near-infinite configurability. Pricing at time of writing runs from roughly $25 per user per month for Starter Suite up to around $330 for Unlimited editions, with AI add-ons billed separately and implementation costs that dwarf the subscription. Switch if you need enterprise governance, custom data models, compliance scope, or you already run Sales Cloud — nothing on this list matches its ceiling.
Stay if you're under a few hundred agents and want to move this quarter. Salesforce implementations are measured in months and consultants; teams leaving Intercom for "something more serious" often underestimate this.
Drift
Skip this one. Drift was the conversational-marketing pioneer, but Salesloft has wound it down: it was taken offline in September 2025 after a supply-chain security incident, it's no longer sold to new buyers, and third-party comparisons indicate the chat widget stops working on 31 January 2027. Even at its best it was a marketing-side chat tool rather than an Intercom-class support platform.
GoSquared CRM
GoSquared pairs website analytics with lightweight contacts and live chat tooling — historically its "People" product, now folded into contacts terminology. Third-party listings have quoted its CRM entry near $29 per user per month with a limited free profile tier, but I could not verify current CRM pricing on GoSquared's own site at time of writing, so I'm not treating it as a recommendation. If a small analytics-plus-contacts bundle is genuinely what you need, take a look; for support at Intercom's level, it's not in the same conversation.
How to choose
Start with your dominant channel and your bill shape. If AI-first conversational support is the goal and you can meter it, Intercom's Fin is still the strongest agent — model the per-resolution cost first. If email ticketing and predictable per-seat cost win, Freshdesk is the head-to-head pick. If service must share data with sales, HubSpot Service Hub-service). If the real need is selling, Freshsales (small teams) or Coevera (15+ sellers). If you need enterprise control, Salesforce. Treat Clay as a growth add-on to any of these, and skip Drift and GoSquared.
FAQ
**Can I use Fin with a different helpdesk?
Yes — Intercom sells Fin standalone at $0.99 per resolution at time of writing, working on top of helpdesks including Salesforce. It's the pragmatic middle path: keep or adopt a cheaper desk and bolt on the strongest AI agent.
What is the best Intercom alternative?** Freshdesk for most support teams at time of writing — comparable helpdesk fundamentals, far more predictable pricing. If conversational AI is the priority and the budget follows, Intercom's own Fin remains hard to beat; the alternative question usually resolves into a budget question.
Why is Intercom so expensive? Seats, plus $0.99 per Fin resolution, plus add-ons (Proactive Support Plus at $99 per month, Pro from $100 per month at time of writing). Each is priced rationally; together they scale with success, so a good AI month costs more than a bad one.
Is there a cheaper Intercom alternative with an AI agent? Freshdesk includes Freddy AI Agent sessions in its per-agent price (500 sessions included at time of writing, with metered extras), and Tidio's Lyro offers an entry-level AI agent with a free tier — see our Tidio comparison elsewhere in this catalogue.
