Why look for a Sage (UK) alternative

Sage is the incumbent of British small-business accounting, and for good reason: it is HMRC-recognised for Making Tax Digital, its VAT handling is built around UK rules, and accountants know it. But incumbency is not the same as fit, and there are well-established reasons UK businesses look elsewhere.

Price is the loudest one. Sage Accounting's list prices at time of writing run £20/month (Start), £43 (Standard), and £59 (Plus) excluding VAT — the promotions that make entry cheap (a 90% discount for the first six months has been running) roll off to full price, and customers I have spoken to are often startled at month seven. Move up to Sage 50 and the numbers change character entirely: new-customer pricing starts around £92–£115/month plus VAT for Standard, with Professional tiers above £230/month for multi-user setups. That is serious money for a small firm, and separate price lists for new and existing customers make renewal negotiation a chore.

The second reason is the experience. Sage's product family is sprawling — Sage Accounting, Sage 50, Sage 200, payroll add-ons — and the seams show: different interfaces, different account systems, migration between tiers that is more project than upgrade. For businesses that just need clean books, quotes, and invoicing, the depth is more than they want and the interface less than they hope.

The third is CRM. If you came to Sage for "accounting and CRM in one," know that CRM is a bolted-on story across the range rather than the core. Businesses whose real need is sales pipeline, project management, or European invoicing standards (Peppol) end up pairing Sage with other tools anyway — which is exactly what the alternatives below do differently.

The alternatives compared

My criteria: fit for the buyer's country and tax regime (a decisive factor in this category), value for money after promotional pricing, how much of the accounting-plus-CRM-plus-projects bundle each covers, and migration pain from Sage. Geography matters more here than in most categories — several picks are Benelux or French-market products, and I flag that honestly in each section.

Teamleader

Teamleader (Teamleader Focus) is the Benelux answer to Sage's bundle: CRM, quotes and invoices with Peppol e-invoicing, time tracking, project management, and reports in one subscription. At time of writing the packages run €37.50 (Smart), €49.50 (Grow), and €67.50 (Flow) per user per month billed annually, with 50% off from the sixth user — so a small team's effective price is friendlier than the headline. Against Sage it wins on workflow coherence: quote to invoice to time sheet without changing systems.

Switch if you are a service business in Belgium or the Netherlands — Peppol invoicing and local tax handling are native. Stay if you are UK-focused: Teamleader does not replace UK statutory accounting and MTD VAT handling the way Sage does, and its support and tax depth for HMRC specifics are not its home turf. At time of writing, per teamleader.eu.

Sellsy

Sellsy is the French all-in-one: CRM and prospecting, quotes and invoicing with electronic signature, cash flow tracking, and marketing, starting at €29/user/month billed annually (€35 monthly) with a two-user minimum on its Prospecting & Sales offering. The pipeline-to-invoice flow is its strength, and its configurability suits businesses with a defined sales method.

Switch if you operate in France or sell into it — French invoicing compliance and language support are the reason to pick Sellsy over Sage. Stay if UK bookkeeping compliance is the job: Sellsy's accounting story is French, and porting it to HMRC requirements would mean fighting the tool. At time of writing, per go.sellsy.com/en/offers.

Axonaut

Axonaut is the small-firm all-in-one from France: CRM and pipeline, quotes and invoices, expense and purchase tracking, cash monitoring, and basic automation, with pricing starting around €38/month for the entry bundle (third-party listings vary from €49.95 to €69.99 depending on the package — confirm on the vendor page) and a 15-day trial. It targets exactly the business that outgrows spreadsheets but does not want an ERP.

Switch if you are a French or bilingual small firm wanting sales and admin in one affordable tool with real human support. Stay if you need UK compliance depth, multi-currency enterprise reporting, or the scalability of a Sage 50/200 setup — Axonaut's ceiling is the small business. At time of writing.

SuiteCRM

SuiteCRM is the open-source answer: a full-featured CRM you can host yourself, with no per-user licence fees at all — the software is free (AGPL-3.0), and you pay only for hosting, setup, and support if you want them (managed hosting from the vendor runs paid tiers, e.g. business plans around £180/month for a managed instance). For a cost-conscious organisation with technical capacity, the economics are unmatched: unlimited users on infrastructure you control.

Switch if you want ownership, customisation freedom, and no per-seat meter, and you have someone who can run it. Stay if you want accounting out of the box — SuiteCRM is CRM, not bookkeeping, and you will be building or buying the accounting link yourself. At time of writing, per suitecrm.com/pricing.

Vtiger

Vtiger is the all-in-one CRM that adds what Sage's CRM story lacks: sales, marketing, support desk, and lightweight inventory and project modules in one product. Pricing is among the lowest in the category — One Pilot free, then $12 (Growth), $30 (Professional), $42 (Enterprise), and $50 (One AI) per user per month billed annually. For an SMB that wants CRM depth without enterprise pricing, it is a lot of product for the money.

Switch if CRM is the primary need and accounting can stay in a separate specialist tool. Stay if UK accounting compliance is primary — Vtiger's books features are not built for MTD and UK VAT the way Sage's are. At time of writing, per vtiger.com/compare-editions.

e-Boekhouden.be

e-Boekhouden.be is the Belgian sibling of the Dutch bookkeeping platform: online accounting with invoicing, bank links, and Belgian VAT handling, at roughly €7.25/month without invoicing and €12/month for the full package (per third-party comparisons at time of writing). If you run a Belgian entity, its local compliance is the point.

Switch if you are a Belgian small business and want straightforward local bookkeeping at a fraction of Sage's price. Stay if you are UK-based — the product assumes Belgian tax rules and is Dutch-language first, which makes it the wrong tool for HMRC obligations. At time of writing.

e-Boekhouden.nl

e-Boekhouden.nl is one of the most popular Dutch bookkeeping packages, and its pricing is hard to argue with: from €9.95/month for the ZZP (freelancer) package — capped at 240 entries per year — up to around €24/month for fuller tiers, plus a genuinely generous starter offer of 15 months free for newly registered businesses. Bookkeeping, unlimited invoicing on higher tiers, VAT returns, and bank links are all there.

Switch if you are a Dutch freelancer or small firm (the ZZP package is absurdly cheap for what it does) and want local compliance almost free. Stay if your obligations are British: this is a Dutch product, in Dutch, built for the Belastingdienst. At time of writing, per e-boekhouden.nl/prijzen.

MYOB

MYOB is the Australian accounting incumbent — the Sage of its market — with Solo around A$11/month (A$99/year after intro periods), Business Lite around A$35/month, Business Pro around A$70/month, and AccountRight tiers above that for inventory-heavy firms (introductory pricing is aggressive; regular prices are materially higher). It covers invoicing, bank feeds, payroll with Single Touch Payroll, and BAS lodgement.

Switch if you run an Australian business and need ATO compliance and payroll done natively. Stay if you are in the UK — MYOB's compliance core is Australian, and it would be a lateral move to a foreign rulebook. At time of writing, per myob.com/pricing.

How to choose

Sort by tax regime first, price second. UK business, primary need is compliant books? Test Sage Accounting against the reality of post-promotion pricing, and only leave if something specific grates — the credible exits are Vtiger-plus-something for CRM-heavy needs or SuiteCRM if you have technical capacity and want ownership. Belgian or Dutch entity? e-Boekhouden in its local variant or Teamleader if you also want CRM, projects, and Peppol invoicing; Sellsy or Axonaut for France; MYOB for Australia. A service firm that wants quote-to-cash in one European tool should trial Teamleader or Sellsy before assuming Sage's ecosystem is the only path. Whatever you choose, move at a year end, not mid-quarter — accounting migrations punish the impatient.

FAQ

What is the cheapest real Sage alternative in the UK? For bookkeeping itself, staying on Sage Accounting's Start tier at £20/month may be the cheapest compliant option; if CRM and invoicing matter more than statutory accounts, Vtiger at $12/user/month or self-hosted SuiteCRM at £0 licence are cheaper, with accounting kept in a separate tool.

Does anything replace Sage 50 for UK compliance? Not cleanly at the small-firm end — Sage's UK tax depth is its moat. Xero and QuickBooks are the usual Sage 50 comparisons in the UK market; among the alternatives on this page, the European tools solve invoicing and CRM, not HMRC statutory accounting.

Teamleader or Sellsy for a European service business? Teamleader (€37.50–€67.50/user/month) is stronger for Benelux, time tracking, and Peppol; Sellsy (from €29/user/month, two-user minimum) for France and sales-prospecting workflows. Both beat Sage on CRM and project flow; neither replaces UK tax compliance.
